THE WOMEN OF THE INDIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

MARTHA MARIAM SAMAJAM

The Martha Mariam Samajam is an organization for the women of the Indian Orthodox Church. This organization was derived to enhance and enlighten the spiritual and social growth of the women of the church. The Martha Mariam Samajam acquired its name from one of the most honored saints of our church, who is St. Mary. It is said in Luke 1:28 the angel came to her and said, "Peace be with you!" The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!" Saint Mary the mother of Jesus was a woman with grace and was truly blessed to give birth to the Son of God. In Luke 1:46 it says Mary said, my heart praises the Lord; my soul is glad because of God my saviour…" The women of Saint Gregorios, Queens conduct Martha Mariam Samajam meetings after Holy Qurbana every Sunday. They come together in prayer, singing devotional songs, and reading passages from the Bible. Meetings and discussions are lead by our vicar. The members of the Martha Mariam Samajam are involved with many other activities, such as conducting the eight-day lent. Also, collecting money for charities, such as leprosy patients and earthquake relief fund. The main focus of the Samajam is prayer. Prayer is an important aspect of our daily lives. The role of a woman is important in a family, to set an example for the other members of the family. As wives, mothers and homemakers, we must lead a life of prayer that will be beneficial to all those we come into contact with. I want to thank God for all the women of this parish and their commitment to honor this parish to the best of their abilities.

May the powerful intercession of St. Mary be with us all always.
